Jewellery Allergies
In the majority of cases it is the nickel content in costume jewellery which causes an allergy or a reaction. Always look out for costume jewellery stating that it is 100% nickel free. Although there are some people who find they cannot even wear nickel free jewellery for very long or, not at all.
If you have bought a product that states that it is nickel free and you have had a reaction, talk to the retailer who sold you the item, they in turn need to talk to their supplier.
But do consider that there are other reasons too why we can get a reaction. If there is something such as a soap residue caught between a ring and the skin it is this that can cause a reaction and is one explanation why occasional flare ups happen.
If a piece of jewellery causes a rash remove it immediately. Skin reaction typically includes itchy, red, blotchy skin resulting in eczema like symptoms. A reaction to nickel can be quite serious for some people and if the problem is on going consult a doctor or pharmacist.
Always look out for earrings with stainless steel posts, you will find that these are the norm for good quality costume jewellery earrings. A clear lacquer is sometimes available from jewellery retailers and this prevents the metal earring post coming into contact with the skin. The bottle is usually about the size of a bottle of clear nail varnish but do remember that you will need to reapply over time as the lacquer will wear off with use.
